Amos Kiteria


Today we met Amos Kiteria. I have attached some pictures of Amos. He is the cutest kid but he has some kind of growth issue. My guess as a non-medical opinion is that he has a faulty pituariary gland. 




He is 15 years old and is in the 8th grade. He is just 3 feet tall. Judy Ginn and I were approached by a teacher from Buria Primary School and she told us his story. His parents are dead and he was being raised by his grandmother. For some reason the grandmother passed Amos to Marianna, a teacher at Buria Primary School. Amos seems very bright, curious and like what you would expect of any 15 year old. He speaks excellent English and answered our questions. Judy offered to let him use her camera and he walked around and took pictures of a cement mixer, the flowers, etc. He does have an issue with his teeth. His teeth are beautiful by he is still losing his baby teeth and getting the permanent ones. We were asked if there was anything we could do. We suggested Doctors without Borders. If anyone has any ideas, I would welcome them.

Two days of STEM Training

Jambo Everyone, So much for my first attempt at spreading Swahili. Spell Check changed Jumbo to Jambo and I didn’t catch it. My second attempt is wazungu. It means “whites”. In our trips here we contribute in any way we can. So I volunteered to help built 10 desks. I mentioned in Journal # 7 that I was working with a skilled handyman building desks. While building the desks we had quite an audience. I am sure that they were wondering what are these “crazy wazungu” guys doing. The first 2 days of STEM training were exciting. After going through the goals of the STEM training and some other administrative things, the core training commenced. It is such a privilege to watch the American teachers doing what they are so good at. The matriarch of the training teaches math. STEM Education (continued)

I saw a bumper sticker in the Taita Taveta County Building that was meaningful. It said, “Many who plan to talk to God at the Eveleth Hour, die at 10:30.  Jumbo Everyone, You have just learned your first word in Swahili. It is a greeting that people say to each other here in Kenya. Part II is totally different than Part I. In Part II we stay in one place and not nearly as much time is expended traveling. Also, it is focused on one thing, STEM Education. So on Saturday we rode the new train built by the Chinese. The Chinese are a big force in Africa and the American presence is zip compared to the Chinese. The train now runs from Nairobi to Mombasa. Eventually, it will go to Kisumu. The train is quite comfortable and modern. During the train ride, a number of different animals were seen from the train. We were met at the train station by the driver we met last year.
